“He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth.” Isaiah 40:22

The ancient Hebrew word used here for “circle” describes a 3-dimensional circle, or what we would call today, a “sphere.”

While the majority of the world believed in a flat earth until a couple centuries B.C., there had been evidence that was acknowledged that the earth may be round leading up to Eratosthenes’ discovery in 240 B.C. Then, with the advent of intercontinental travel, since people have been able to fly or sail between the northern and southern hemispheres, it was noticed that the star patterns are entirely different – the North Star is not visible in places like South Africa and Australia, while they are visible in places like Ecuador and Kenya on the equator. Different views, for different sides of a sphere – while, if the earth was flat or even disc-shaped, all sides of it would get nearly the exact same view of the stars. This theory was confirmed by satellite imagery for the first time in 1966.

Discovery: Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion

The sun is the center of the solar system, and all other planetary objects orbit around it held in space by its gravitational force. This was revolutionary, as the prevailing theory in science descended from Aristotle in 350 B.C. that the earth could not possibly hang on nothing, that it was stationary in the middle of the solar system and all other things revolved around it. This conclusion was held for nearly 2,000 years, and other religions were in line with it. Hindus believed that the Earth was held on the back of four elephants standing on the back of a cosmic turtle named Akupara. In Greek mythology, they believed that the god Atlas held the earth upon his back, written by the poet Hesiod. Norse mythology held that the Earth, along with 8 other worlds, are held up by a giant ash tree, Yggdrasil. The Bible is the only religious book that had this correct, right from the beginning!

The Hebrew word for “finished” denotes a past-definitive tense of the verb “finish” – the universe and all its energy and matter were complete upon existence and did not continue in an ongoing state of creation.

The First Law of Thermodynamics states that matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. Thus, all the matter and energy that is here, is all the matter that’s been here since the dawn of the universe. The universe is not in an ongoing state of creation, it was finished at its “birth.”

Discovery: The Second Law of Thermodynamics (Law of Increasing Entropy)

The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that there is always a natural tendency in energy to degenerate into a more disorderly state – but changes in entropy can never be negative – entropy, the lack of predictability of energy and gradual decline into disorder, can never get more orderly. It can only get less orderly. For example, if you put laundry in the dryer, it’s not going to come out separated, pressed, and folded. You can’t unscramble an egg.

Atmospheric Layers

Year: 1902 AD

On April 28, 1902, Leon Teisserenc de Bort, a French meteorologist, announced that, beginning 6 years prior, he had launched hundreds of unmanned balloons with instruments onboard to investigate the atmosphere. As the first to do so, what he discovered changed meteorological science forever.

He found that as the balloons rose, atmospheric temperature would drop about  0.6°C every 330 feet…that is, until reaching about an altitude of about 7 miles, at which point it would stop falling, and sometimes even increase slightly. He named the upper level the “stratosphere,” and the lower level the “troposphere.” His theory was that different gases settled in different layers, and the fluctuating temperatures of the troposphere were possibly due to the mingling of different gases, while he posited that the stratosphere was where the different gases began to reside in distinct strata, without the mingling of other gases to disturb them. E. Gold discovered in 1909 that the change was, instead, due to the cooling of rising air in the troposphere, and the lack of rising air currents in the stratosphere.

Since these layers cannot be detected from the 7 miles below the stratosphere, or by the naked eye from the ground, how is it possible that the Bible called them out by name some 2,600 years prior to the existence of technology that made their discovery possible? Only the One who made them, and knows the end from the beginning, could have done so.

The idea that water evaporates into clouds and rains down back into the rivers and seas was not well understood until the sixteenth century. The prevailing theory was that all rivers and lakes were fed by underground freshwater systems, an idea proposed by Thales of Miletus in the early 6th century B.C. Aristotle wrote that it would be absurd if one were to believe streams were sourced from places we are able to see, and Galileo in 1600 AD expressed frustration at not being able to understand the source of stream flow. The discovery that rain alone was enough to source freshwater systems was revolutionary at the time.

Laminin is a family of glycoproteins on the outside of the cells of all animals. They are necessary for basic cell function and assembly of cells in an embryo, but their primary purpose is cell adhesion and structural scaffolding– they are, quite literally, what holds us all together.

The connection to the Bible? This is Laminin:

“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18.

“And the Lord God said unto the serpent: ‘Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou from among all cattle, and from among all beasts of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.” Genesis 3:14

The Bible states that Satan took on the form of a serpent in order to tempt Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. When they did, they and the snake that caused the temptation were cursed.

Discovery: all snakes have a gene for regrowing limbs

Year: 1999 AD

Not only have fossils been found of snakes with four limbs, but scientists have also discovered that snakes still have the gene for growing limbs, called an “enhancer” gene now because they do not actually have limbs. In fact, some types of snakes, such as pythons and boas, still do grow tiny vestigial “leg spurs” – they just never complete the growth. Their genetic code is built in such a way as to cause them to grow limbs. So why don’t they?

Geneticist Axel Visel says this: “[O]ne of many components of the DNA instructions needed for making limbs …. in snakes, it’s broken.”

Scientists have surmised that this was a gradual process of DNA regulation, however, there are a couple problems with that idea:
1) the fossil record doesn’t support a gradual process. Snakes once had functional legs – and then, poof, they didn’t. Gene: broken.
2) the process of natural selection in a species through evolution deals with genetic mutations – a mutation will either be successful and established in the species to form more diversity, or it will be unsuccessful and the mutation will die out and be deleted. The ability to grow legs does not appear to have been just a singular mutation to begin with – the gene is ubiquitous across the whole species. For the whole species to have lost the ability to grow legs, but still retain the genetic code to, it wasn’t just a gene deletion – something had to have gone wrong.

So how did it get that way all of a sudden, in such a way and to such an extent as to radically affect all future generations of snakes? The Bible has an answer for that – a programming change by its Creator.

Discovery: process of protein synthesis

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The ever-burning question has gone one deeper – which came first, the protein or the RNA? It has been discovered that there are three building blocks of all biological organisms at the molecular level: protein, RNA, and DNA. The conundrum is this: protein and RNA have a mutually symbiotic relationship. RNA makes proteins, and proteins are an ingredient of RNA. Neither can exist without the other, and neither could have spontaneously assembled without the other. So, which evolved first?

Science is discovering now (Georgia Institute of Technology, 2020) that neither evolved first – it is impossible for either to have existed without the other. However, the other side of that coin is that for both to have had two separate origins at the exact same time in evolutionary history, and then found each other, is “an extreme improbability” because they still would have had to exist for a time and replicated without the other – they had to have come into the world together.

Sounds a lot like…intelligent design.

Science now has an answer to the age-old dilemma just mentioned: as it turns out, the chicken came first.

Researchers have accidentally discovered a special protein contained only in the ovaries of a chicken, that converts calcium carbonate into calcite crystals, which then work in conjunction with the chicken’s ovaries to create the shell of an egg.

In other words – a chicken egg can only exist if it’s been inside a chicken’s body.

All avian species studied so far have a variation of the protein for their own unique species. To quote the man who made the discovery – “They produce these wonderful shells that protect them in the North Sea. That crystal structure is far in advance of anything that we as humans can create in the lab,” Freeman said, adding, “We can’t make a human skeleton in the lab…”

“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord?” Romans 11:33-36

This same principle also applies to the universe at large – it’s how we can see stars from billions of lightyears away, beyond what scientists ever believed should be possible – God created an adult universe. He created things with inherent history at the time of creation.

Discovery: Zinc sparks at conception
Proven by: Teresa Woodruff, Northwestern University
Year: April 2016

For a few years, scientists had been aware that an egg emits a microscopic flash of light on conception in some animals. But this had never before been proven with humans – until now. Scientists have confirmed that zinc causes sparks when a sperm meets an egg, and they have discovered “the greater the flash, the better the egg” and the higher chance of viability for developing into an embryo.

For the first time, science has confirmed – the more light, the greater chance at life.

The first three chapters of the Bible contain all the acknowledged building blocks of the observable universe: space, time, matter, and energy.

Discovery: Theory of General Relativity
Proven by: Albert Einstein
Year: 1915 A.D.

Humans have been on a quest to discover the very fabric of the universe for millennia. When Albert Einstein published his famous journal on General Relativity, it revolutionized how scientists viewed reality. The theory of General Relativity, as explained by Stanford University, states the following: “General relativity tells us that what we call space is just another feature of the gravitational field of the universe, so space and space-time can and do not exist apart from the matter and energy that creates the gravitational field.”

This presents a conundrum for science that has not quite been straightened out yet – how did it all come into existence at the same time? Scientists have proposed the theory of The Big Bang… but if that was the case, then where did the matter come from that collided? And where did the energy come from that caused the particles to move and collide? And where did the space come from in which the matter and energy moved, causing the collision? And last but not least…what are the odds that two subatomic particles floating in illimitable space would happen to find each other, with no preexisting energy to cause them to move, and collide at the exact same time (which doesn’t exist in the absence of space, matter and energy) at the speed of light (which didn’t exist yet), with such force that the entire universe resulted, breaking virtually every law of physics discussed thus far (including the first and second laws of thermodynamics)? And how has it not happened again, now that the universe is full of space and matter and energy (last estimated number of atoms in the known universe: 10^80th power)?

This problem is compounded by adding kinetic theory, developed by three separate scientists independent of each other from the 1700s to the 1800s, which states that at absolute zero degrees, all molecular motion of matter stops. In other words, in a universe where heat doesn’t exist, all matter comes to nearly a complete stop at the molecular level. Heat is “the movement of particles through solid, liquid, and gases.” Therefore, the existence of heat necessitates the preexistence of space, matter, time, and energy. The Big Bang theory presents an incomplete scenario that is not plausible according to the many observable laws of physics, yet the Bible presents a scenario that is in harmony with them.

God made every individual planetary object unique.

Discovery: Law of the Conservation of Angular Momentum
Proven by: Jean Buridan, Isaac Newton
Year: 1330, 1683 AD

The Law of the Conservation of Angular Momentum states that when something is rotating, it will not stop rotating until it’s acted on by an outside force. If that object breaks off into smaller pieces, each piece will inherit the same spin – the same angular momentum.

One would expect, then, if the universe exploded out of one particular point and one particular collection of matter during an event such as The Big Bang, that all the planetary objects would have inherited the same angular momentum and be rotating in the same direction from the time of the explosion- yet that is not the case. While Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune spin counter-clockwise, Venus spins clockwise, Uranus spins on its side, and Pluto (while no longer considered a planet) spins clockwise like Venus. In addition, even the planets’ satellites (moons) do not all have the same direction of rotation. While most rotate prograde (the same direction as their respective planet), there are many that rotate retrograde (the opposite of its planet). Four of Jupiter’s major moons, along with many of its smaller moons, rotate retrograde, along with Saturn’s moon, Phoebe, and Neptune’s moon, Triton.

It’s interesting that, even in our small sample-size of a solar system, there is no total uniformity on the direction of rotation, and no particular pattern to the discrepancies. The planets and moons are truly unique – just as the Bible says God made them.

Discovery: other galaxies beyond the Milky Way
Proven by: Edwin Hubble
Year: 1924

For thousands of years (in fact, for all of human history leading up to the 20th century), astronomers believed that the number of stars in the sky could be counted. In Claudius Ptolemy’s Star Catalogue, dating back to the second century AD, he claimed he “observed as many stars as it was possible to perceive, even to the sixth magnitude.” His list contained 1022 stars. The telescope was invented in the 16th century, and around 1700, the Flamsteed Star Catalogue contained 2554 stars. To this day, the most stars visible to the naked eye on the darkest night have been numbered at around 3,000. Galileo discovered that the Milky Way is not just wispy light in the sky, but that it’s made up of stars, and surmised there could be ten times the number of observable stars in our galaxy (up to 30,000). But until the twentieth century, the maximum counted number of stars was sustained at around 3,000.

That is, until it was discovered that our galaxy is not the only galaxy in the universe. When Edwin Hubble discovered the Andromeda galaxy in 1924, it opened up a whole new can of worms for astronomers. Not only have astronomers discovered that there are other galaxies in the universe, they’ve also discovered that, in fact, there are somewhere around two trillion galaxies in the observable universe alone. Each one of those galaxies, they assessed, most likely contain around 100,000,000,000 stars, if they’re anything like the Milky Way. That would mean there are about 200 billion trillion stars in the universe. But wait, there’s more – in 2010 they discovered that all galaxies are not like the Milky Way – at least a third of them are elliptical, not spiral, galaxies… elliptical galaxies contain many more stars than ours. And by the way, there are now an estimated ten trillion galaxies. So now, the estimate is somewhere around 1 septillion (1 with 24 zeroes afterwards)…and according to astronomy professor David Kornreich of Cornell University, that number is “likely a gross underestimation.”

For scale, it would take one person counting to a million per day, every day for 3 quadrillion years to finally reach one septillion.

While astronomers today can run calculations to estimate how many stars there may be in the universe, it is generally accepted that the stars are, indeed, innumberable.

How did three separate people from two to three thousand years ago know that, when the stars visible with the naked eye have always been able to be counted?

“But God made the earth by his power; He founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.” Jeremiah 10:12

“My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, _ and my right hand spread out the heavens…” Isaiah 48:13

“This is what God the LORD says, the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out…” Isaiah 42:5

The universe was stretched out in the beginning, and it continues to be stretched out presently.

Discovery: the period-luminosity scale, light spectrum of spiral nebulae, Hubble’s Constant, Planck Satellite Map
Proven by: Henrietta Leavitt, Vesto Slipher, Edwin Hubble, European Space Agency
Year: 1912, 1929, 2019

In 1912, Henrietta Leavitt published her work on the period-luminosity scale, which enabled astronomers to calculate the distance between earth and any given visible star. Independent of that discovery, Vesto Slipher discovered that moving nebulae emit light on a spectrum, and that if they were moving away from earth, the light veered towards the red end of the spectrum. As he analyzed more stars, he discovered that nearly all of them were moving away from earth.

With the framework of these two discoveries, Edwin Hubble discovered in 1929 that the “red shift” of galaxies was directly proportional to their distance from earth. Thus, the farther away from earth galaxies are, the faster they’re moving away from earth – meaning the universe must be expanding. How fast it’s doing so has been the subject of much study over the last century, with recent calculations equating to about 73 kilometers per megaparsec (a megaparsec is just over three million lightyears).

But scientists have run into a conundrum as more data has been gleaned. One of the discoveries made used the European Space Agency’s Planck satellite to “map” the universe as it existed in its earliest stages of existence – 380,000 years after the “Big Bang” – based on particle remnants left over where matter used to be. Using this map, astrophysicists have calculated the rate at which the universe should be expanding today. The problem is – there’s a large discrepancy between that rate, and the rate that astronomers are actually observing today. The currently observed universe is expanding much faster than it should be.

While one would think it would be easy to decide which measurement is true and which is not, and discredit one or the other, both measurements have been “thoroughly vetted” by science – they’ve been tested and proven time and time again. Astronomers can’t dismiss either of them as an error in theory or method. The probability of the discrepancy being a fluke, based on the most recent Hubble data as of 2019, is one in 100,000. As lead researcher and Nobel laureate Adam Reiss, of the Space Telescope Science Institute and John’s Hopkins University, told NASA: “This mismatch has been growing and has now reached a point that is really impossible to dismiss as a fluke. This disparity could not plausibly occur just by chance…If these values don’t agree, there becomes a very strong likelihood that we’re missing something in the cosmological model that connects the two eras.”

Numerous theories have been proposed that are currently being studied, but NASA believes that these new findings support the idea that “new physics may be needed to explain the mismatch.”

What’s even more fascinating is Stephen Hawking’s discovery in the 1960s, whereby he declared, “If the rate of expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by even one part in a hundred thousand million million, it would have recollapsed before it reached its present size. On the other hand, if it had been greater by a part in a million, the universe would have expanded too rapidly for stars and planets to form.”

If the aforementioned odds of one in 100,000 are too little of a probability for human measurements and theories to be considered a “fluke,” how can anyone possibly consider the odds of the universe exploding and expanding, at the exact rate necessary to continue to exist, within a margin of error of “one part per hundred thousand million million,” and determine that to be a fluke?

While the world’s leading astrophysicists call this discrepancy a “mystery,” the Bible tells us that God spoke and “the heavens were of old” and “He stretches out the heavens.” The present universe, as we know it, is not something that came about by accident, or something that follows human theories of what it should be doing. It’s in existence purely because of the infinite intelligence of the God who created it and continues to align with the Bible, the Word of the One who “overturns the wisdom of the wise, and turns their knowledge into foolishness.” (Isaiah 44:25.)

Discovery: electromagnetic waves

Year: 1880s

In the late 1880s, Heinrich Hertz was conducting experiments with a spinning magnetic apparatus called Riess Spirals (below) and Hertz noticed sparks flying between the balls. He became fascinated by them and began to study them intensely.

Using a spark gap attached to an induction coil, and another spark gap on a receiving antenna as far as 1.5 meters away, Hertz visibly proved the existence of electromagnetic waves – energy moving across space at the speed of light. By the end of 1886, Hertz had successfully produced and detected radio waves.

At the time, Hertz was underwhelmed by his possible contributions to science, stating: “I do not think that the wireless waves I have discovered will have any practical application.” He was soon to be proven wrong.

Ten years later, in 1896, Guglielmo Marconi received a patent for wireless communications, and by 1901 he had successfully sent a wireless communication across the Atlantic Ocean, from Britain to Canada.

By the 1920s, radio waves were no longer sent via sparks, but by vacuum tubes, which then grew obsolete in favor of transistors and amplifiers. Today, electromagnetic waves are ubiquitous in technology – we send and receive wireless data across the world and to satellites in space constantly…and it all began with the discovery of sparks – tiny lightnings – just as the Bible predicted around 4,000 years ago.

Discovery: The Law of Biogenesis
Proven by: Francesco Redi, Louis Pasteur
Year: 1668, 1861

Since the time of Aristotle (400 B.C.), the generally accepted theory of how life comes about was the idea of spontaneous generation, or Aristotlean Abiogenesis. Philosophers of the time believed, based on their observations of the environment around them, that living organisms could spontaneously erupt from nonliving matter. For example, they believed worms and lizards could come into existence out of the mud, and if food spoiled, insects would start erupting out of it. This theory was hardly questioned for two thousand years, until Francesco Redi, an Italian physician, decided to put it to the test in 1668. He put meat in three containers – one with a lid, one with a piece of gauze over it, and one with no lid – and let it rot. His findings were the grandfather of the biogenesis theory – the idea that living organisms come from other living organisms, not nonliving matter.

Even following his findings, the official hypothesis of biogenesis was not fully proposed until two centuries later. More people had started to believe that perhaps larger organisms only came from other living organisms, but most still held that smaller organisms could spontaneously generate from inanimate objects. That is, until Rudolph Virchow formally posed the hypothesis of biogenesis in 1858, and the next year Louis Pasteur conducted a series of experiments that proved the theory all the way down to the bacterial level.

The theory of biogenesis has now been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt and is considered scientific law. The one problem? It’s a scientific law that, once again, causes problems for the proponents of the Big Bang theory.

Life begets life. Life has never once been demonstrated to have resulted from non-life.

Discovery: Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance

DNA methylation was discovered in the 1920s, showing that one of the ways genetic expression functions is by chemicals recruiting proteins to affect which genes in the DNA get expressed. In other words, DNA contains lots of genes, but not all are “active” at any given time. So essentially, genes can be passed down as “on” and “off” switches, either predisposing an individual to certain conditions when switches are flipped “on,” or protecting them from certain conditions when switches are flipped “off”. This has been studied for a long time as a mechanism by which diseases are passed down for generations, like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, etc… the children of those who have these diseases generally have a higher risk of getting them, because the switches for those diseases in their genes are turned “on”.

Enter C.H. Waddington, who, in the 1940s, conducted experiments on fruit flies. He exposed them to different environmental conditions, including temperature and chemicals. He found that not only did these conditions affect the fruit fly itself, but subsequent generations who had not been directly exposed. This was found to be because of a layer on top of the genetic code of all living things, called the “epigenome.” This layer regulates gene expression by modifying how the body reads the DNA, involving the aforementioned process of DNA-methylation (flipping genes on/off), mRNA, chemical reactions, and hormones. In other words, while the epigenetic layer doesn’t always change the genes or the DNA itself, certain exposures can put a “stamp” on the genetic code that changes how the body reads the genetic instructions.

The understandings in the field of epigenetics has skyrocketed in the last century. It has been discovered that so many things affect how the body reads genetic code – from environmental pollutants to addictions and chemical exposures… from emotional trauma, depression, and anxiety to disease, physical and emotional stressors, and beyond. These stimuli cause genetic code to be “stamped,” affecting how the body reads it, and is passed down to successive generations (three to four, just as the Bible says). Whether male or female, the results are the same – the genetic stamp gets placed on all the genetic code in one’s body, including that which will one day be used to conceive a child.

One study showed that, in rats, those who were born to very nurturing, high-licking mothers treated their babies the same way, and vice-versa for those who were born to non-nurturing mothers. But when they took a baby who was born to a non-nurturing mother and gave it to a high-nurturing mother to raise, that baby treated its babies in a nurturing manner – proving how the baby was raised had a strong effect. Good upbringing predisposes one to good upbringing, if their environment and personal decisions support it.

One study showed that children born to parents who had previously experienced the Holocaust, although the children hadn’t experienced it for themselves, began to “display severe psychiatric symptomatology. It would almost be easier to believe that they, rather than their parents, had suffered the corrupting, searing hell.” Dr. Vivian Rakoff, 1966. The extreme emotional trauma of their parents was enough to affect their unborn children. This was also demonstrated in dogs, who, if born to a mother who once experienced or witnessed abuse by men, would exhibit an intense fear of men after being born even if they themselves had not experienced it.

Another example is in the area of addiction. Scientists have done studies on mice that have shown that babies born to mice who were addicted to a substance (cocaine in one study and chocolate pellets in another) begin showing similar drug-seeking or chocolate-pellet seeking behaviors, even though they themselves had not been exposed before. The same has been found in humans – a child of an alcoholic is born with the alcoholism “switch” in their DNA turned “on”. They are predisposed to alcoholism, and have a higher chance of becoming an alcoholic if their environment and personal decisions support it.

Environmental pollutants and chemicals have been shown to affect how our bodies reads their functioning instructions as well, causing disease, malformations, cancers, mental health conditions and more – and these transcriptions can be passed down for three to four generations, even to those who were never exposed themselves.

From addiction to trauma, environmental exposure to mental and physical disease, the Bible has been shown true once again – the iniquities of the fathers truly are passed down to the third and fourth generations. Each of us carries stamps on our genetic code of the decisions our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents made and even possibly those before them.

There is one way to reverse these epigenetic changes we’re born with, and those we cause ourselves…one way to “wipe the slate clean” of all the “sins of the fathers.” Science shows avoiding bad habits and chemicals, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can cause individual DNA methylation to reverse. If sustained over three generations, the genetic code can undergo a “factory reset” of all the harmful epigenetic imprints. The Bible gives us clear instructions on foods to eat and foods to avoid, and how to live a healthy lifestyle that will help us reverse the “generational curse”. God knew over 3,000 years ago how DNA methylation worked and how to correct it – because He created the processes themselves.
