The average weight of an anchor for a cruise ship is between 10 to 15 US tons (9000-13600 kilos), and they are usually around 15 feet in height and width. The weight of the chain is what holds the ship’s position in the water, and the anchor plants it into the ocean floor. While there are different sizes of anchors for different sizes of ships, the size of the anchor has to be big enough to sustain the force of the weight of the ship. And to be effective, the anchor needs to be able to not only rest on the bottom of the sea, but actually dig into the seabed for grip and have enough slack that the chain can rest on the bottom as well, to lock it in place and absorb any drift from the ship.
This gives a whole new meaning to the verse:
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19
The passage is referring to God’s promises…our hope in Him fulfilling his word is an anchor for our souls. No matter how massive, how out-of-control, how tempest-tossed our souls may be, that anchor is stronger. God’s Word is strong enough to plant us right into the bedrock— Jesus, the Rock of Ages (Isaiah 26:4). And as He says, “My grace is sufficient for you— My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9.
No matter how big the issues you’re dealing with, drop your anchor. Root yourself in the Word of God and trust. If you do this, you will not be moved. ⚓️
“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, He is my defense: I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and glory, the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, ye people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” Psalm 62:5-8
